The Shed at Tokavaig, Skye, is a labour of love designed and built by Mary Arnold-Forster of awardwinning architects Dualchas. Like much of
Dualchas' work, The Shed is inspired by the traditional
Highland blackhouse, simple shedlike buildings constructed using local, often salvaged, materials. Lovely to look at with its corrugated larch cladding, it also features solar panels, underfloor heating and the first grant-aided exhaust-air heat pump in Scotland. There are also smashing views of the Cuillin mountain range and across to the islands of Rhum and Canna. Unsurprisingly, The Shed won this year's New Building category in the IAA Design Awards
There's a documentary about the building of The Shed on December 18 (tomorrow) on the
Discovery Channel and a nice piece in
The Times.
Best of all, if you want a special shedworking holiday, you can rent it out.
