Thatched 'Tudor' shedworking for children

For just £6,500, this '1 bedroom detached house' in Shrivenham could be yours. Or at least your child's, as it's a thatched Wendy House, fully furnished (two beds, armchairs, grandfather clock, etc), with the potential to be connected to mains water and electric. According to the particulars, "The Wendy House is only suitable for small children as it has very restricted headroom, but it is possible for an adult to squeeze inside when crouched down." -----------------------------------------------------

The Brokedown Palace

A perfect post with Christmas coming up, the Brokedown Palace is an online shop selling worldwide from its shedquarters, a wooden cabin on the bank of the River Lea in Hackney Wick, London. Here's what they say about it all:
Everything we stock is inspired by cabin lifestyle, from essential survival kit to décor and clothes. This doesn’t mean it’s only for cabins – we believe you can bring a bit of cabin spirit into any part of your life. Cabin life is about being close to nature and this informs everything we do.
If you're an ethical shopper, this is very much for you - items are made from, and packaged up in, ecologically friendly materials made in fair labour conditions, and the shop positively supports small businesses and traditional crafts. Indeed, stock is kept in a secure storage unit powered by 100% renewable energy sources.

In terms of shedworking, the cabin is made from FSC accredited slow grown Swedish pine, while the interior is made from reclaimed floorboards from a demolished Edwardian factory. The roof is made from recycled tyres and cardboard. The decking area is made from reused oak sleepers.

And last week they opened a store at the Boxpark pop-up mall in Shoreditch, a shopping mall made entirely of old shipping containers. They are in Unit 24 (see below).

Shore Cottage Studio on Amazing Spaces

George Clarke's ongoing Amazing Spaces series looking at shedworkingesque atmospheres continues this week with a look this Thursday at 8pm on Channel 4 at Shore Cottage Studio, a lovely artist's studio space put together by Swift on the Wirral peninsula with views over the Dee estuary towards North Wales.

Swift Garden Rooms’ Company Director Martin Lawson said: "This unusual and exacting build
was meticulously planned around high tides and the migratory patterns of wading birds as every element had to be brought along the sand by a tractor and trailer." It certainly was a tricky build since the studio is cut off by tides twice a day.

Plankbridge's new hut brochure

The latest brochure from Plankbridge about its shepherds' (and other) huts is a really lovely piece of work. There's an example above and you can see more on the site of the Wallis Agency who put it all together. If you're thinking of buying one but aren't quite sure, this will tip you over the edge. In a good way. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shedlike speciality coffee shop in Manchester needs funding

Here's a fascinating project to set up a coffee shop in Manchester in a garden office-type pod. Peter Gibson and Luke Tomlinson of Grindsmith are looking for funding on Kickstarter .

Here's a snippet of their plan:
Whoever said that 'great things come in small packages' could well have been speaking about our pod. With just enough seats for 8, and space solutions that Ikea would be proud of, we aim to bring a more personalised coffee experience to the good folk of Manchester.
You can see more design details on their Pinterest page and more about the project in general here.

Special beach hut insurance - exclusive offer

We tend to think about beach huts in the spring and summer, but in fact now is a very good time to think about protecting your hut and making your insurance arrangements before winter really sets in. The recent St Jude’s Day storms hit many of our coastal towns and highlighted just how vulnerable beach huts can be (pictured above is a Brighton hut overturned in the rotten weather, as reported in the Independent).

So we've teamed up with Love Your Hut who provide excellent cover at competitive premiums (and have been in the industry for 15 years) to offer you a little festive something. Either go online and get an immediate quote and cover at www.loveyourhut.com or have a chat with one of their consultants, on 0113 357 0204 - and if you mention you heard about them on Shedworking and insure your hut with them, they’ll give you £20 worth of M&S Vouchers as a special  'thank you'.

As well as working with individual hutters around the country, Love Your Hut also team up with associations to offer tailormade products and services. For a copy of their Winter Newsletter - with practical tips for wrapping up your hut - please email enquiry@loveyourhut.com. If you would like information about your local Beach Hut Owners’ Association, or the benefits of starting an Association, contact them at the same address. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hobbit sheds

If you're intrigued by hobbit-like sheds, then readersheds.co.uk is the link to nip off to. We particularly like the one above from Chris Almond which is built into the hillside but there is a good selection of others too. Happy hobbitshedworking! -------------------------------------------------------------------------

UK Men's Sheds Association officially launched

Although it's been kind of up and running since March, the UK Men's Sheds Association was officially launched today - click here to read our extensive coverage on Shedworking on the subject and organiser Mike Jenn has also written a marvellous piece about the importance of Men's Sheds in the Guardian today. But in brief here is their own description:
A Men's Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men's Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.
It's well worth having a look around their site where there are lists of sheds up and running already around the UK, a list of events and advice on how to get started. Well worth a browse. -----------------------------------------------------

Ben Fogle: shedworker

A nice - if perhaps rather blokey - piece by broadcaster and traveller Ben Fogle about his shed in the Daily Telegraph (which also mentions a quarterly magazine called The Shed - I wonder if he's getting confused with the pdf forerunner of Shedworking?). Here's a snippet:
"While many people prioritise practicality, my vision is entirely driven by aesthetics and provenance. I wanted everything in my shack to have been recycled, upcycled or reused. And of course, it had to look the part. The doors came from an old museum, the wooden cladding was from pallets, the lights were salvaged from a ship, the windows came from an old factory. The crowing glory was a tiny wood-burning stove, to provide a glimmer of heat in the upcoming winter. All of this was topped off with a children's turret, with a tiny trap door, ladder and firemens pole."
