Friday Fancy: Earthquake House

It may be news to you that Comrie in Perthshire, Scotland is the UK’s earthquake capital. Also known as ‘Shaky Toun’, Comrie is built right on top of the Highland Boundary Fault and as a result, it is subject to more frequent tremors than anywhere else in the UK. It is also home to Europe's first Earthquake House, pictured above, built from stone in 1874 as the first purpose-built seismological monitoring observatory in the world. Sadly, the square shedlike building is not usually open to the public since shutting in 1988 although you can peer in through the windows and see elements of the old seismometer.
