The Brewery Shed

Garden shed manufacturer Tiger Sheds and Northern Monk Brewery have collaborated on a new project, The Brewery Shed (motto: 'Build it. Brew it. Drink it'). The package comes with the Grainfather All-In-One Beer Home Brewing System - which makes up to 40 pints of beer per batch - so you can make your own craft beer in your garden office (the first Shedworking HQ was home to annual cidermaking and the staff can recommend it). Other features include a pull down, bar style hatch to serve your beer and internal shelving.

Jack Sutcliffe, Web Operations Manager at Tiger Sheds said: “We wanted to create something unique – a brewery bar that you can set up in your garden. In The Brewery Shed, with the Grainfather, you can create exceptional craft beer at home to rival any brewery.”

Russell Bisset, Managing Director of Northern Monk Brewery, one of the UK’s leading craft breweries, added: “When we were approached by Tiger Sheds with an idea for The Brewery Shed, it’s fair to say our imaginations were sparked. The majority of us here at Northern Monk come from home brewing backgrounds and the idea of owning our own little brewery in our back garden would be a dream come true.”

The Brewery Shed available to buy from Tiger Sheds website and you can also win one in a special competition - more information on the Tiger Sheds Facebook page.

KFC Internet Escape Pod

For those who are after some themed shedworking, how about this 'garden office' from Colonel Sanders and his team, the Internet Escape Pod. According to KFC, "this dome is like a magic force field designed to disrupt the internet coming to and from your devices. So this holiday season, let Colonel Sanders' protective embrace help take you, and up to three average-sized adults, back to a simpler time. It's a steel and stainless steel mesh cage (the Colonel is high-density architectural foam and enamel paint) and measures 7ft by 7ft by 6ft.

Benedict Cumberbatch shed controversy

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is discovering that applying for permission to build a garden office or shed in your garden is not always plain sailing. He has recently applied to Camden Council to build an outbuilding in the back garden of his London home which he has already extended as well as converting the attic. It's not a small build, measuring nearly 3m high and over 6m wide, to be built in wood and with a green roof, as well as trellis (you can see a Daily Mail mock-up of how this might look). It's not entirely clear what he intends to do with the shed but as Barbara Ellen points out in the Guardian"supersheds have become status objects for men and women alike".  We'll keep you updated on developments...

Garden office cat flap

Many shedworkers also enjoy the company of their pets during the working day. So here is a marvellous additional feature from Nottinghamshire-based The Cosy Shed Co, a Sure-Flap microchip cat flap which can be easily fitted to the walls (but not the door) of your garden office. Other accessories from the company include a work bench, guttering, and decorative garden hooks. ---------------------------------------------------------

Shedworking: Lavoro e buen retiro in giardino

Brush up your Italian with this nice little piece about garden offices in Viva Italiani. Here's a snippet:
Lavorare a casa, magari in giardino circondati dal verde e dalle proprie cose. Un sogno che diventa realtà e adesso tendenza in Inghilterra, Usa, Germania, Paesi Bassi ma anche in Giappone. Il termine giusto è “Shedworking” che sta a significare lavorare in giardino, precisamente nel casotto degli attrezzi... Shed in inglese vuol dire proprio “capanna”, “baracca” e nel senso dato al termine di cui parliamo “casotto”.

David Solomons: Shedworker

Dorset-based writer David Solomons (screenplay for Five Children and It, and more recently My Brother is a Superhero, My Gym Teacher is an Alien Overlord, and My Evil Twin is a Supervillain) is also a shedworker, as is his novelist wife Natasha Solomons. Here he is talking about his splending writing shed, pictured above, to the equally splendid Book Trust:
'Some writers will tell you that working in a room with a view is a very bad idea. How can you possibly concentrate with herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically outside your window? While I am sympathetic, I confess that I've always craved a glassy, airy, minimalist space with the kind of view to get an estate agent thumbing frantically through his thesaurus. Since our children came along, the minimalist bit has taken a battering, but I'm not complaining. In My Brother is a Superhero, the narrator, Luke, regards his tree house as his sanctuary. This is mine.'

Music studio with stage

A marvellous garden office music teaching studio with additional performance space in Newcastle, Australia, by m3architecture.This is what they say about it:
We took inspiration from a method of teaching, founded in Finland. When considering Finland and music, we couldn’t help but think of architect Alvar Aalto and Finlandia Hall. This precedent provided a glimmer of a studio – a light filled space, with timber stage, white backdrop and blue audience zones compressed into a small studio. The design creates a unique backyard pedagogy – a spatial environment that enables students to drift in and out of practice and performance. The duality of the concept hybridises two worlds – the high architecture of a public building, and the DIY approach of a backyard.

A House for Edwin Denby

Regular Shedworking reader Arne K̦nig writes from Sweden that the Thoreau inspired cabin featured on the site earlier this week made him think of this cabin in southern Swede. It's an art installation by Robert Wilson called A House for Edwin Denby which is sited in the sculpture park at the Wan̴s Konst РCenter for Art & Learning in Sk̴ne. A celebration of the life and work of the Amerian poet and critic, it has a simple Shaker feel but as you approach loudspeakers relay a text of Wilson reading a text. You can't actually go into the building, but you can peer through to see a chair and table.

Urban Botanics - garden office gardening

Research consistently shows that greenery in the workplace - however small that may be - is good for our health. Indeed, many shedworkers are also keen gardeners. But whether you're already pretty experienced with a trug or just wondering what might work in the limited space inside your garden office, Urban Botanics by Emma Sibley (Aurum Press) is well worth a look and certainly worthy of a place on your shed bookshelf.
Essentially it's a lovely plant guide, with atmospheric full page illustrations over its 150 pages by Maaike Koster  (to be honest, it's quite relaxing simply looking at her art work) and very readable text by Emma Sibley, founder of London Terrariums. They have picked 70 different plants including succulents, cacti, flowering and foliage plants so there will be something for whatever size garden office you work in. Among the choices are the Bunny Ears Cactus, Copper Pinwheel, and Swiss Cheese Plant. Each one gets a double page spread with enough relevant information about what it is and how to look after it without vast quantities of text to wade through. Recommended.

Nomad Cabin

With a strong nod to the Godfather of shedworking Henry Thoreau and his Walden project, Out of the Valley design and build what they call 'environmentally sensitive spaces' using a mixture of traditional craftsmanship and modern construction techniques, as well as local materials and timber - these would be ideal as garden offices. As they say: "Simple modest living brings qualities to life that often we can not name. Our rural studio and workshop designs and builds places to dwell and nourish, preserve and enhance." The cabins are off-grid and use solar power.

Pictured above and below in the video is the mobile Nomad Cabin but there are several other designs including:

* Oak Cabin - with oak flooring and verandah, bi-fold doors, canvas awning, king size bed and mezzanine

* Estuary Cabin - clad in charred larch with oak interior, and woodburning stove

* Larch Shelter - birch ply vaulted ceiling and walls

Garden room workshop for a jewellery maker

Here's a rather nice garden room workshop that Miniature Manors built for a jewellery maker in Sussex. The structure is clad in cedar externally and has OSB walls internally. As all of their designs are bespoke, MM chose the OSB as it is a good material for hiding dirt in a workshop and also looks great in a workshop environment. The client was renting a workshop, but opted to have one of MM's garden rooms at home as a long-term, cost effective solution.

The full spec:
  • 6.2 metre by 4.5 metre garden workshop
  • Height of 2.5 metres
  • Concrete base
  • Flat EPDM rubber roof
  • Walls, floor and ceiling fully insulated with 50mm celotex
  • Tyvek breathable membrane wrapped around structure for ventiliation
  • External walls vertically cladded in red western cedar sourced from sustainable forests
  • Internal walls boarded with OSB
  • Electrics including 8 double sockets, internal & external spotlights
  • Electrical connection to the house
  • Guttering connected to water butt
  • Double-glazed uPVC French Doors
  • Three double-glazed uPVC windows
  • Mositure-resistant laminate flooring
