"I need some plans to compare mine with so I keep the building in line with their original specification. Both are in remarkable condition, the Nissen Hut is going to make an excellent cinema and the Quonset I am spec'ing for my father in law as a country retreat. Any advice/help will be gratefully received. At the end of the project I will be having a party of all helpers (we are in Lincolnshire, close to Sturgate Airfield)."Please let me know if you can help or just leave a comment below.

ReplyDeleteI support this suggestion.
ReplyDeleteQuonset is located in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. This is a photo essay of the former base, including a few images of the eponymous huts. Also, the University of Colorado in Boulder once has a few of the huts that were used as married student housing. I believe they were unpopular as it was difficult to fit furniture against the curved walls and they were not attractively fitted out.

ReplyDeleteI have seen corrugated iron huts with brick ends in pretty good condition. The hut I inspected was built with flexible lengths of corrugated iron, with the corrugations running along the hut, rather than as preformed self-supporting arches.
ReplyDeleteThe corrugated iron layers were supported by curved I-shaped beams, with inner and outer sheets of corrugated iron against the upper and lower flanges. The inner sheets were held in place by a wire tensioned over each edge of the sheet, around the inner flanges, holding the sheet against the flange.
This information is from inspection where one side of an internal sheet had been prised loose. I do not recall how the external layer was held against the outer flange.
The huts are near Ripon, on an old army bridging station off Boroughbridge Road, opposite Newby Hall and are visible in Google Earth.
