Western Red Cedar

Not all garden offices are made of wood, but chances are that if you're going down the timber shedworking route then some part of your new workplace will include an element of Western Red Cedar. Dawn Kubicek from Decorated Shed (pictured above) outlines its appeal:
One of the materials that we employ in every single design is premium Western Red Cedar, which we use as exterior cladding. This beautiful wood has numerous visual, performance and environmental qualities that make it the perfect choice. So why do we use Western Red Cedar?
- Natural beauty: outstanding physical properties that make it one of the world’s most unique woods, with a strikingly beautiful colourisation at every period of its ageing process
- Thermal insulator: powerful heat retention helps keep the building interior cool in summer and warm in winter, resulting in lower running costs
- Internal oils: providing an organic preservative that allows the wood to resist decay, making it the most suitable material for all climates and enabling a phenomenal lifespan
- Weather resistant: comfortably combats seasonal extremes, with a far superior performance to concrete, brick and stone
- Ecologically friendly: incredible natural performance qualities mean that no harmful chemicals are required
This last element is one that attracts many suppliers and buyers. Indeed, Scott Horner from Decorated Shed has just got back from Globe 2010 in Vancouver, Canada, where he met up with manufacturers who supply the best quality Western Red Cedar wood, sourced from certified managed resources.
