Archipod garden office on stilts
The leading spherical garden office manufacturer Archipod has a new model. It's a new type of 2.2m diameter 'mini' pod on stilts which will be used as a craft room for a teenager. Entry is via a circular hatch at the rear of the pod or - more excitingly - by an access hatch in the floor. Like the other models, it will be fully insulated with lighting, heating and power. Another new faeture are the interior curved painted panels which replace the usual plastered finish.

The Pod from Archipod
The spherical Pod from York-based Archipod (pronounced 'ark-ee-pod') is an insulated, prefab, curved plywood shedworking space roughly 3m in diameter (and a height of 2.5m from floor to underside of the rooflight) specifically targeted at the garden office market. They are also working on a 'Fatpod' of 4m diameter which could be used as a meeting room space. Features include the pleasing roof dome, double glazed stainless steel porthole window with our old friend Western Red Cedar for external cladding (though they are also looking at reclaimed copper, stainless steel, and recycled car tyres as alternative claddings), and a snazzy semi-circular desk.
It'a also fully insulated using fibreglass insulation made from recycled glass. There's a rather nice photomontage option too: send them a photo of where you'd like to put it in your garden and they will add in a 'Pod' and send it back to you.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can Archipod crack the US shedworking market?
We've talked before several times about whether shedworking will take off in the USA as it has done in the UK so we were particularly intrigued to read James Reed's piece at The Business Desk about how Yorkshire firm ABF, which makes the Archipods, is starting to take off in the USA where it launched its garden office design this week in New York. ABF managing director Darren Buttle told Reed: “It’s going extremely well in New York. It’s such an important city for us when you consider the size and scale of the business community... Orders are already coming through, and we’re confident we can build on our success to date in the US and continue our upwards trajectory." He added that the firm was also looking at Canada, Brazil and South East Asia.
Indeed, the Archipod web site has a dedicated US site as well as a UK one and is also selling through other US outlets such as Hammacher Schlemmer. We will watch them with interest...

Circular garden offices
Technically, these prefab shedworkingesque buildings are not garden offices but pods for up to four people to sleep in at the Suntrap Forest Centre in Epping Forest. However, they do come from garden office manufacturer Archipod so if you like the look of them, it would be well worth getting in touch.

Shedworking in the Daily Mail
A big piece about Shedworking by Claire Allfree in the Daily Mail ("a garden office no longer means a twee, alpine confection that looks like a prop from the set of Heidi") with some not very inspiring quotes by me and some nice namechecks for lots of familiar and some less familiar names including Archipod, Skinners Sheds, Warwick Buildings, Crane, Adaptapods, Pod Space and Booths Garden Studios.

The Conker: Circular shedworking
The ‘Conker’ (more images at the link) is the brainchild of engineer Jag Virdie and will appeal to anybody who also enjoys the sheditecture of the Archipod. It has a 3.9m diameter and floor area of 10m2 and according to Jag can be set up in a single day. No traditional foundations are needed. Here's what he says about the project:
"My engineering perspective was further enhanced through a desire to give my children ‘hands on’ practical experience, culminating in building wooden sea kayaks and a spherical tree house. The Conker™ was born in 2015 through the knowledge that a garden building should be aerodynamic, strong and versatile. I envisaged a contemporary, state of the art, desirable environment which could be adapted and personalised. A sphere was an obvious choice and a full-size prototype was built, realising my aspirations."

First look at Piers Morgan's new garden office
We reported last November on controversial broadcaster Piers Morgan's plans to become a shedworker, going down the garden office path with Archipod. Above is the build taking shape, with the structure in place, battens and waterproof membrane on show. The next step is plastering the interior. It's not clear which of Piers' homes this is going to be sited in, but this is what the back garden at his London home looks like (he tweeted it out a couple of months ago) so this might be the location.

Can Atelier crack the Hong Kong shedworking market?
Hard on the heels that Archipod has the US market in its sights, Manchester-based garden office specialists Atelier has announced it is opening a Hong Kong office. The move is in collaboration with Hong Kong-based businessman David Bojan who told The Business Desk:
"I love Hong Kong for its vibrancy and creativity, and as such I have made it my home. However, it is a densely populated environment. For those fortunate to have outdoor space – a roof, a terrace, a balcony, perhaps even a garden – there is a tendency to try to convert this into additional living space. Unfortunately, current options are limited to pre-fabricated metal rooms, rather like portacabins, or a tailor-made arrangement which is often of poor quality."We will watch with interest...

Piers Morgan's garden office final touches
We've been following the build of Piers Morgan's garden office on Shedworking for nearly a year now, but here's the finished product from Archipod. It's one of their 3m models and here's what they say about it:
"Special features on this one are the walnut veneer desk, with burr walnut edge, and curved shelf unit. The desk had a few firsts, with having to steam bend the edgings, and the steel on the shelves had to be blackened by heating with a blow torch, and brushing oil on with a wire wool brush (we did have a couple of ‘flame outs’ whilst doing it!)."

Piers Morgan: shedworker
Journalist and broadcaster Piers Morgan is about to become a shedworker. He announced his intention on the breakfast show Good Morning Britain this week and said he was looking forward to having his own dedicated garden office where he could write his columns and books. It's not clear exactly which model, but it comes from the Archipod stable which we have featured several times before on Shedworking. Planning permission is ongoing but it looks like it's going to happen.

Armadilla
The Armadilla is a garden office designed by Archie Hunter and his son Ross which they say combines traditional boat building techniques with state-of-the-art modern methods of construction: all timber is sourced from sustainably managed forests in the Scottish Borders, steamed and then shaped in special moulds to create the eyecatching Armadilla look (which reminds us slightly of the Archipod). "The use of timber helps to sequester the CO2 naturally present in the wood and helps makes a reduction in the output of greenhouse gasses," they add.
The whole thing is built on a steel base which can be lifted by forklift, crane or helicopter and sited on level ground, gravel base, bark or even on the beach should you so want. Some more details:
A breathable waterproof membrane is attached internally and then 50mm of Thermafleece sheeps wool insulation from British flocks is fixed in place before the internal lining is installed. Externally, the timber is coated with Osmo, a natural oil wood treatment. Units can be fitted out with a 240 volt system (with underfloor heating if required) or have a 12 volt system powered by PV cells for off grid situations.
There are various sizes of Armadilla all of which would be useful for shedworking or co-shedworking and indeed they have built more than 150 Armadillas. You can see lots more photos, interior, exterior and of the construction process at their Flickr site here.
