Beach Hut Tuesday - Dungeness

Two very different kinds of beach huts for you today, all on the beach at Dungeness in Kent. First of all two from Squirmelia in the Dungeness flickr pool. And then the marvellous rubber-clad Vista from Simon Conder Associates, winner of the The Stephen Lawrence Prize. (Re)built using timber and spruce plywood as a weekend retreat for two people, the 92 square metre house was originally a 1930s fisherman's hut which was then extended. The rubber is an echo of the more traditional felt and tar of similar buildings. And there's a 1954 Airstream caravan for visitors to stay in.

Beach Hut Tuesday - Life's A Beach Hut

"This is a kind of 'memorial' to the beach huts that used to occupy spaces along the length of the beach in Barcelona, Spain. I don't know the whole story but basically they were done away with and this monument marks as some sort of respect to what was once there. I never seen it at night, but from what I can see it can light up. Must look great."

Beach Hut Tuesday - Lucas Kuys' Ark

The Ark is abstract artist Lucas Kuys' floating beach hut (put on the market last month for £60,000) at Burnham Overy Staithe, near King's Lynn, Norfolk. It's 16ft 5in x by 6ft (1.8m) and built on a raft using driftwood, reclaimed wood and the roof of a grocery van. It's been in situ, anchored so that it doesn't float away, for around 50 years since it was built by a local doctor.Via The Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph where there is lots more detail.

Beach Hut Tuesday - end of the bubble?

icWales reports that the falling property prices seem finally to be having some effect too on beach huts with a hut at Abersoch (corrugated sheeting, wood, 4m x 2.7m, no electrics or water) being sold at auction for its guide price of £70,000. Martin Lewthwaite, senior manager with the selling agents Beresford Adams, is quoted as saying: “Compared to huts we sold last year for £75,000 this one was quite cheap." Of course you can bring a beach hut into your shedworking atmosphere quite easily at an even lower cost using the lovely felt draught excluder pictured above from idealMoments.co.uk.

Beach Hut Tuesday - Wexler Beach Building

Qualifying both for the beach hut slot and the Wexler Studio Week, here is Wexler Studio's Beach Building for Art on the Beach, four shedsworth of wood, paint, fabric, each shed 8' x 2'6" x 2'6", in collaboration with the Jane Comfort Dance Company. As the studio says:
"The building explores the ambiguity between small beach cabanas and big city buildings. It functions as a stage set as well as a site specific sculpture. The sheds are like costumes. Dancers could occupy them. I define architecture as choreography without a choreographer."
The building, set up in lower Manhattan on sandy landfill for a series of performances, was a central part of the production, thanks to its rotating doors and the fact that each shed can be turned inside out or linked together. We're stopping Tiny House Tuesday since Kent Griswold is doing such a cracking job over at Tiny House Blog which is where you should head for all your tiny house viewing.

Beach Hut Tuesday - Lincolnshire coast

While the Bathing Beauties beach hut extravaganza last year was very exciting, the traditional beach hut design takes a lot of beating. Here are some examples by Michael Trainor (who organised Bathing Beauties) of existing traditional huts along the Lincolnshire coast from Mablethorpe to Anderby Creek. There are currently around 520 existing huts in use or in disrepair along this 10 mile stretch of stunning coastline. Thanks to Lesa Dryburgh for supplying the images.

Beach Hut Tuesday - Eyes Wide sHut

The Bathing Beauties festival-extravaganza-competition last year was a marvellous showcase for new beach hut designs. Above is one of the most intriguing, and one of the winners, Eyes Wide sHut from Feix&Merlin (photo by Michael Trainor). Those interested in the above and other Bathing Beauty designs will be interested to hear that there is a possibility of commissioning full scale designs from the Bathing Beauty web site. For more details email questions@bathingbeauties.org.uk
Thanks to Lesa Dryburgh from Stop The Pigeon for the photos
