Building a garden office: part 2 (video)

We're highlighting a couple of 'how to build a garden office' video series at the moment. Here's the latest episode - see bottom of this post - from web designer and developer Jack McConnell's build (you can see part one here). Here's what he says about it:

This second video is mostly a 2-week timelapse of all the deconstruction and re-construction work that happened in my garden as a result of this. The work included removing a large hedgerow, replacing all the fences, installing a new side-gate, and adding a compacted hardcore pad ready for the office foundations to sit on. I wasn't going to add a hardcore pad at this stage but as the digger was there and the company I was using were well priced, I decided to get this done at the same time. Although not in the video, it turned out the trees in the hedge were so rotten that a couple of them snapped in half when pulling them over, punching a large hole in the old fence before it was fully removed - a good job I had it all replaced!

All the insulation for my garden office build just arrived! Really pleased except it’s filled my garage :/ May need to re-think how I’m going to store my materials.

Building a garden office: part 3 (video)

Here's the latest from web designer and developer Jack McConnell's video series on how to build a garden office (you can see earlier episodes here). Here's what he says about it:

In this video, I set out my foundations and mortared them to my hardcore pad with the help of my Dad (thanks, Dad!). Nothing too technical or informative but a good, quick view of the materials and technique I used to install them.

The next episode will deal with building the floor.

Roof timber has arrived between rain showers. Really hoping to get the walls square and roof mostly assembled this weekend.

Building a garden office: new series of videos

Web designer and developer Jack McConnell has started what he plans to be a series of videos over the next year detailing how he is designing and building his garden office (first episode below). Here's what he says about the project:

This first video is a bit of a mish-mash of information and video clips, as I've already embarked on some of the work but wanted to include as much as possible on the background, reasoning, and thought-process behind why I want to build my garden office over buying a pre-manufactured one. I won't be going over absolutely everything in a high-level of detail (particularly when it comes to the construction of the building), but instead want to focus on the decisions and stages of how I achieve my goal over the course of a year.

Another of the garden office builds we've been keeping an eye on this year is by web designer and developer Jack McConnell who has been chronicling it by video and he is nearing the end, working here on the side and front walls (you can see the others here. "In this video," he explains. "I build the two side walls and the front wall and run into some pretty devastating weather!"

How to build your own garden office: updates

We've been following several garden office builds on Shedworking this year. Above is Tracy Goodyear's who is nearing the end of her build. Here's her latest update:

This Friday, the electrician is coming to fit the Cat5 cable and the armoured electrical mains cable which will run from the house. As soon as that’s done, we’ll be ready to add the drywall and skim it. I did a Level 1 Plastering Course a couple of years ago at a night school at a local college, so I’m looking forward to dusting off the tools next weekend! Easter holidays can’t come soon enough!

Tracy is also the world's first owner of our brand new Haynes Shed Manual (see below) and was kind enough to say the following about it: "Really wish I had come across this book sooner as I probably would have been a little more adventurous with the style of roof and some of the other designs for the office- but this is a great read and takes you through the specifics, regardless of your experience."

Building a garden office: final update

If you are planning to build your own garden office from scratch then there is lots of advice on this site about how to go about it. But the one thing you really must do is watch the series of videos which web designer and developer Jack McConnell has been posting over the last year (see them on Shedworking here or at Jack's YouTube page here) about how he has built his own garden office.

Here's the final one below in which he adds cladding and guttering and presents the history of the build. However, he does promise future related videos which we will keep an eye out for.

Working from home cuts burglary levels, claims new report

A new report from global independent research network CESifo indicates that as well as chopping out your commute, shedworking from a garden office and working from home in general reduces levels of burglary.

In their study 'Do Remote Workers Deter Neighborhood Crime? Evidence from the Rise of Working from Home', authors Jesse Matheson, Brendon McConnell, James Rockey, and Argyris Sakalis show that WFH (as the Shedworking staff hate to call it) is responsible for about half of the 30% drop in burglarization since 2019 in England and Wales. More specifically, in an area where there's about a 10% rise in homeworking, there's a correspondeing 4% fall in burglaries.

On the downside, what seems to happen is that the problem gets pushed into neighbouring areas where there is less working from home.

Building a garden office: parts 9 and 10

We've been following the garden office build by web designer and developer Jack McConnell for a year now as he chronicles it via a really excellent video diary. Here are parts 9 (adding the electrics and networking cables, fitting the insulation, and putting up a vapour barrier on the walls) and 10 (adding plywood walls, making holes for the electrical and networking boxes, and getting everything ready for painting). One of the garden office builds we've been following this year is nearing completion. Building a garden office: part 8

One garden office build we've been following all year is at the roofing stage. Web designer and developer Jack McConnell is now chronicling stage 8 of the build (you can see the others here) and the video below shows him adding fascias, completing the rubber roof (which readers of my recent Shed Manual from Haynes will know pleases the authors), installing the window and door (with help from his father-in-law), and getting the trench dug for his electrics.
