Beach hut advent calendar

For many years, the Shedworking staff in the runup to Christmas looked forward to the annual beach hut advent calendar down in Brighton & Hove but which sadly stopped running in 2018. The hardworking Hove Beach Hut Association said it was hoping to pick up the reins in 2019 but that was just before the world was hit by lockdowns and plans have understandably been put on the back burner. However, the assocation is holding a Winter Open Day on December 18 from 4pm until 6pm when many huts will be open to the public and with modest festive theme displays - look out for laminated posters such as the one below to indicate which huts are taking part. Fingers crossed that next year the advent calendar will return!

Beach Hut Advent Calendar 2010

The annual Beach Hut Advent Calendar in Brighton & Hove has become one of Shedworking's favourite regular treats and details of this year's events are now available online at www.beyondchurch.co.uk. Here are a few highlights:

LAUNCH NIGHT

The calendar launches on December 1 with a display by St Christopher's School Hove who will also bring their choir and the stars of their nativity play.

CHOCCYWOCCYDOODAH

Brighton chocolate specialists Choccywoccydoodah are helping out in a number of ways this year. They are going to be opening hut 79a by Hove Lawns on December 5 with a specially created Madonna and Child cake which also features as the prize to whoever comes to the most beach huts throughout the month: organisers of the calendar will issue 10,000 'loyalty cards' which can be date stamped when people attend and entered into a draw on Christmas Eve and the winner will get to take the cake home with them for Christmas. They will also be giving out chocolate along with the mince pies and mulled wine every night.

MAKE MY MARK

December 12 will combine with the launch of child charity Make My Mark and start of a beach hut project which will continue on Boxing Day and throughout the year.

CHRISTMAS EVE
Everyone is invited to come dressed as their favourite nativity story character so that they can create a massive live nativity scene throughout the evening.
As in previous years we'll cover the huts throughout advent.

Very big beach hut advent calendar

BEYOND is an organisation in the Brighton area which offers an opportunity for people to explore spirituality through a variety of creative approaches. And their latest approach is very shedworkinglike, The Advent Beach Hut Calendar. Here's what they say:
"All along the Hove seafront from the border with Brighton up to the Hove Lagoon there are some 440 beach huts and it occurred to us a year ago that opening their doors was rather like opening the doors on an advent calendar to reveal a piece of chocolate and a suprise picture. We've been able to recruit beach hut owners who are prepared to open their hut for an hour between 5.30pm and 6.30pm at some point during the month and to create a display themed around a Christmas Carol. Some hut owners who weren't able to do a display have been teamed up with local artists and a theatre company who are going to put on something on their behalf."
Check back to their blog for regular updates (which we'll also bring you here on Shedworking in the advent runup to Christmas Day).

Last year for the Beach Hut Advent Calendar

After a decade of opening beach hut advent calendar doors every day during advent along the promenade at Brighton and Hove, Beyond Church have announced that this will be the last year they do so as they will be developing other projects. It's had a good run - one year I did a daily update for The Independent when they first started - and we've been delighted here at Shedworking to preview and report back on each year's beach huts.

It was created to remind people of the Christian roots of the season of Advent. Over the years they have served more than 4,000 warm drinks and 3,000 mince pies. You can see this year's timetable at their site here and we'll be highlighting some of our favourites during December, This year the theme is #FollowtheStar which links to the Church of England's Christmas campaign.

Beach hut advent calendar: day five

The BEYOND beach hut advent calendar for day five continued with the mince pies and mulled wine and this time welcomed visitors inside the hut, some of whom had never been inside one before. A large mirror at the back of the hut added a feeling of spaciousness. More photos, as always, at the BEYOND site. The calendar now heads lagoonwards and tomorrow it's time to open hut 399.

Beach Hut Advent Calendars

Regular readers will remember that last year we featured the marvellous day-by-day real life beach hut advent calendar organised in Brighton by Beyond. So I'm delighted to be able to say that Martin from Beyond has been in touch to say that not only will they be running the event again this year (we'll be covering it every day here on Shedworking) but that they have also produced a rather lovely Advent calendar that you can have in your home too using beach hut images and photos from last year's event. They can be bought through the new shop section of their website for the excellent price of just £5 (+p&p). There'll certainly be one in Shedworking HQ.

Beach hut advent calendar opens its doors

Maybe for the last time, the Beyond Church beach hut advent calendar in Brighton and Hove opened its first doors this weekend. Here's Hut 17 owned by Sarah Sutherland-Rowe (more images of it here) created in collaboration with children from All Saints Hove - it featured an angel with wings made from the children's handprints, and a modern day dress Mary and Joseph. If you can make it to the daily openings for the rest of Advent, the organisers would be delighted to see you and offer you a warming drink and a mince pie. You can also follow for pictures.

Brighton's 2011 Beach Hut Advent Calendar

We mentioned the Bridlingon beach hut advent calendar last week but there's also another series of doors being opened again this year, the Beyond version (see here for previous years' details) which you can also read about on their blog (indeed, they have just launched a series of 14 Christmas postcards featuring a selection of images from previous years' Beach Hut Advent Calendars).

You can download a full list of huts taking part which will be open daily 5.30pm-6.30pm every night in December up to Christmas Day, each one opening to showcase a festive artistic surprise. The launch night hut is being run by St Christopher's school and will feature their choir and art from pupils. Beyond will be serving mince pies and warming drinks and there is an opportunity to win a year's supply of Higgidy pies for the person who comes to the most huts during the event.

Sixth annual Brighton beach hut advent calendar

The fine folk at Beyond Church in Brighton are once again putting on their excellent beach hut advent calendar during December. We've reported on this since the very start (and one year on a daily basis in conjunction with The Independent newspaper which was frankly a bit exhausting) so we're delighted to see them still going strong.

This year, the theme is the 'Alphabet of Advent'  (except X and Z) up to Y for Yuletide on Christmas Eve, on the seafront in a different beach hut every night from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.  Pictured above is last night's hut - B for Brighton & Hove - put together by local artist Nick Sayers via imagery collected by his pinhole cameras around the area over the last six months. We'll be reporting back again for occasional visits later this month...

Beach hut advent calendar

The fine folk at Beyond Church are once again opening up their beach hut advent calendar in the huts along the esplanade in Brighton & Hove. Regular readers of Shedworking will know that each day in December,  a different hut is open to the public from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, individually decorated along traditional Christmas lines. And there are also mince pies and mulled wine on offer. We'll be featuring some of our favourites during Advent.

Beach hut advent calendars open their doors tomorrow

As in previous years (and reported on in these pages), those in the Brighton and Bridlington areas can enjoy their very own beach hut advent calendar openings.

Tomorrow at 5.30pm sees the launch of the fifth annual Brighton Beach Hut Advent Calendar. From the 1st to the 24th December a different hut along Hove seafront will open each night with some surprising festive art. The launch will feature hut 311 with art created by St Christopher's School Hove based on the carol I Saw Three Ships and will include the school choir and decoration created by the children themselves. Other huts will include recreations of the stable complete with smell, all female morris dancers, local poets, various choirs and mathematical art. You can get details of each hut opening by going to www.beyondchurch.co.uk

In Bridlington (click here for more information) doors also open again on 1st December, then on the 8th and 15th, and then everyday until Christmas Eve. Organiser Martin Hutchinson says: "We will be retelling the famous story of the Nativity in the lead up to Christmas in new fresh, fun and interactive ways, using the gifts and talents of local people to delve into the issues that this timeless story tells."
We'll be bringing occasiopnal updates over the next month but do please go along and support these events. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Beach hut advent calendar

Just a reminder that Beyond Church is running its annual beach hut advent calendar again this year along Brighton and Hove's seafront (see here for our reports of it over the last 10 years since it started). Every night up to Christmas Eve a different hut opens its doors to an art installation celebrating  - visitors can enjoy free mince pies and drinks and also collect stamps each night to win a hamper or box of chocolates. Tonight's hut is 227 and 3D advent calendars will be on sale.

Below is the first of the huts, put together by Year 7 pupils of King's School and focusing on the verse from Isaiah in the Old Testament:

'The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on this living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.'

To see all the huts as they are opened day by day, go to Beyond Church's special blog.

Flashing lights, halo, vast singing angels. Now that's what I call a beach hut advent calendar. More photos as always at the BEYOND site. Next hut, 315. I'm speculating now on the Christmas Eve hut...

The Cosmic Shed (and advent calendar)

The Cosmic Shed is a shed-based podcast about the delights of science and storytelling (books, theatre, films, music, television, radio, etc) which is written and presented by Andrew, Laura and Ben from a garden shed in Bristol. Here's what they say about it:
The shed has been enhanced with some homemade weather-proofing, a lick of celestial black paint, three otherworldly armchairs, and a Japanese DIY star projector. Oh, and fitted with microphones to record our babble. We don’t have the budget for a device to control the weather, so any atmospheric sounds you hear are from the garden just beyond the shed’s thin wooden walls.
They are running a special Cosmic Shed Advent Calendar this month which is marvellous. Today's guest is Jessica Fox, writer and former resident storyteller at NASA which is well worth a lesson. -------------------------------------------------

Just a quick note to say that the beach hut advent calendar we previewed at the end of last month is proving to be a great success. You can see all the huts day by day at The Independent and extra photos and information at the Beyond blog. And of course if you're in the Brighton area, do drop in and enjoy the fun.

Beach hut advent calendar: day four

Today's hut (No. 381) features a live carol peformance, a television crew from Meridian, illuminated silhouette art, mistletoe and pebbles painted with white doves. See the BEYOND site for more details. This is rapidly becoming my favourite advent calendar ever. Tomorrow, Hut 227...
