B&Q shedworking television advert - EXCLUSIVE

Those of you who watch gardening programmes will be familiar with B&Q's various ads. So I was delighted to see that they have put one together along a specifically shedworking theme to promote their lovely Shackup Porthole shed (I first saw this during the break on the excellent Landscape Man programme with Matthew Wilson). I asked them (via their Twitter page) if we could run it on Shedworking and they were delighted to make it available exclusively to readers of Shedworking (you won't find it anywhere else on the interwebs, not even their own site). Lisa Neimeth: shedworker

Tableware creator and sculptor Lisa Neimeth works out of her San Francisco garden office - a converted chicken coop - or what she calls her "house of worship" where she aims to make "durable, unique, hand made functional pieces that rival the "Made in China" culture that is so pervasive". She writes atmospherically about her shedworking ethic at her blog and here's a snippet:

If you are an artist, a maker of sorts-whatever it may be, but something that you spend a lot of time doing each day-you have your place..your space where you work away-often time for hours, and hours again, sometimes sneaking back in late at night to adjust an earlier idea. I have my studio which is my true retreat-my place for quiet meditation an escape, really from the real world-or the world that lurks beyond my studio walls. I am lucky lucky to have a beautiful space to retreat to, and I appreciate it every single day.

Teknion: third skin shedworking

The Teknion workstation from Breathe Architects is an intriguing idea which the designers say aims "to provide personal control over the immediate atmosphere the user occupies.  Individual control of the systems that deliver comfort fosters awareness of one's environment and establishes personal accountability for tuning each workstation to operate efficiently". They continue:

The proposed workstation is a comprehensive work environment that responds to the user's particular requirements. Similar to the way clothing acts as a second skin, this workstation acts as a third skin in its ability to effectively modulate the atmosphere to suit our senses. 

This third shedlike skin includes a thermostatically-controlled foot warmer, cool storage and manual heat pump plus a furniture system that "can be configured to create zones that are ON when inhabited and OFF when not in use. Sustainable furniture should evolve into a type of living organism that requires light, energy and air to operate and rejuvenate.  Certain parts can then be taken from the workstation to be replenished.".

New in.it studio in Derby

Here's the latest shedlike atmosphere, in Derby, from in.it.studios which includes three bifolding doors, a green roof, floor to ceiling frameless glazed windows, kitchen and lavatory in its 6.5m x 4.7m spec with Accoya decking. One of the reasons the green roof was included was for aesthetic reasons: the roof is visible from the upper floors of the house.

Beachworking: Surf Shelter

We've talked about tentworking before and the Surf Shelter from HJC Design falls squarely into that category. It's a lightweight, curved shelter for surfers who shoot the curl in the UK so it obviously needs to be pretty resilient. But it's also a perfect spot for some sandy shedworking since it also features a wind and solar power generating facility via its photovoltaic fabric for small devices such as mobile phones.

modpod

If you're looking for an extremely tough garden office then the modpod could be right up your sniper's alley. Although ideal for shedworking (it's got marvellous accoustic and general insulation as well as being fire retardant), it's technically a light and easy-to-build prefab accommodation unit on a very very strong steel structure which is aimed at those in the mining and defence industries: bespoke options include bullet proofing and cyclone proofing. The basic pod is transported like a shipping container and then little sidepods can be pulled out to add living, and working, areas. They're being made in Warooka, near Point Turton, on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, partly to give local youngsters a good chance of a job and to encourage them to stay in the community rather than move away.
