George Bernard Shaw and his writing hut

I haven't been able to track down the full text of this article by Alice McEwan on Shaw and his writing hut - George Bernard Shaw and his Writing Hut: Privacy and Publicity as Performance at Shaw's Corner - but the abstract sounds intriguing.

This article will argue that the locus of [Shaw's] fluidity and theatrical imagination was a writing hut in the form of a revolving shelter, built in a secluded part of the garden, hidden from view. Equipped with a bed and a writing table, Shaw fashioned an outside study as an intermediate space. A site for the performance of the self and an advertisement for his socialist ideas, it was particularly constructive in the promotion of health reform. He ensured that his hut gained notoriety worldwide through the mass media in the form of journal articles and photographs, against the backdrop of his own burgeoning interest in photography and the media. Through the Habermasian theory of “audience-oriented subjectivity” and the ideas of architectural historian Beatriz Colomina, Shaw is considered in ways that have not previously been recognized: anticipating the concerns of modern architecture and Modernism, dematerializing boundaries between inside and outside, between privacy and publicity.

George Bernard Shaw's writing hut in the latest issue of the Idler

The latest issue of the Idler magazine is now out. It has my usual columns on sheds (and snooker) including a look at how George Bernard Shaw used his garden office to promote his own campaigns. Here's a snippet:

Thus, in August 1929, Shaw stood in front of his hut for a photo for Modern Mechanics & Inventions magazine to promote the idea of sunlight as a healing agent (the dramatic postures he effected for these shots were also in line with his interest in eurhythmics, the concept of developing one’s sense of rhythm through movement). He also had windows installed that were made from Vitaglass, a recent invention that allowed UV rays to come through, letting, the makers said, “health into the building”. That move, which was also picked up by newspapers, and indeed his very ownership of a hut with a turntable, placed him in the vanguard of medical thought, since rotating summerhouses were used to treat people suffering from tuberculosis.

George Bernard Shaw's writing hut suffers storm damage

Good and bad news for fans of George Bernard Shaw's iconic writing hut at Shaw's Corner in Hertfordshire. As the picture in sunnier times above indicates, his literary sanctuary now owned by the National Trust is surrounded by trees and when the winds brought down a nearby Scots Pine, it nearly took out one of our foremost shedlike landmarks. The good news is that the tree only gave the hut a mild whack and while it did damage the roof (pictured below and more images of the wreckage in the Welwyn and Hatfield Times), repair work looks like it should not be too extensive.

The Shedworking staff made its annual summer pilgrimage to Shaw's Corner at the weekend and especially to George Bernard Shaw's writing hut. George Bernard Shaw's memory celebrated at his writing hut

Yesterday, volunteers at Shaw's Corner came together at his writing hut for their annual celebration of George Bernard Shaw marking the day in 1950 when the great man's ashes were mixed with his wife Charlotte's and then spread around their garden surrounding the house. On this day, the volunteers meet at the hut and read from his works. An excellent thing to do.

Video of George Bernard Shaw in his writing hut

Although we've featured numerous photographs of George Bernard Shaw's writing hut, both with and without him in it, this is one of the very few pieces of video of GBS in it that we've come across. It's a clip from an excellent video at the East Anglian Film Archive all about Shaw and his home and garden at Ayot St Lawrence in Hertfordshire which also features an appearance from that funster Danny Kaye. Video footage of George Bernard Shaw in his writing hut aged 90

Here's a genuine slice of sheworking history, a long video clip of George Bernard Shaw at work in his writing hut from British Pathé which describes it as "excellent candid footage". It was shot on his 90th birthday at his home in Ayot St Lawrence just up the road from Shedworking HQ. Shaw comes out of his house, wanders down to his garden office, opens it, sits down and starts to use his typewriter.

Film archive British Pathé has put its entire collection onto YouTube. George Bernard Shaw's writing hut is probably the Shedworking staff's favourite garden office and we've documented it in more detail over the last 15 years than I suspect any other site or publication. Way back in 2009 we ran a short photo essay, but we thought it was time to update that a little so we had a weekend trip to take it in again. It's all largely unchanged, though of course you can't go into his house at the moment, the only slightly upsetting thing was that the signage was all a bit bleak and the lovely little sign directing people to the writing hut has gone. And the shed itself is still shut, which is ludicrous. Nevertheless, always a pleasure.

George Bernard Shaw and his writing hut in colour

I'd thought we had pretty much featured all the photographs and footage of George Bernard Shaw and his writing shed on Shedworking, but here's a real treat, a colourised photo by professional photo colouriser Tom Marshall (his website is a delight of other examples) that he produced for an exhibition at the Little Museum of Dublin. This really adds life to what for many shedworkers is a familiar but remote image.

Why George Bernard Shaw's writing hut was so clever

An interesting look at Shaw's revolving hut by Greg Denisiuk at Honest Architecture which suggests that: "It might not be aesthetically pleasing, but there is a beauty to its functionality." Greg describes it as essentially a hut on top of a lazy Susan but says it's cleverly done for several reasons: it meant Shaw was less reliant on an artificial light source; fewer windows were needed for direct light which kept it warmer in winter; and the direct sunlight entering the hut created passive solar heating

George Bernard Shaw's writing hut

Shaw's writing hut is featured in The Guardian's Writers' Rooms series. Michael Holroyd points out that this was Shaw's secret lair where he came to hide from people. We all know it rotates but it was also steeped in the white heat of technology. As Holroyd says:

"There was an electric heater, a typewriter, a bunk for Napoleonic naps and a telephone to the house which could be used for emergencies such as lunch: surely everything a writer could need."

Celebrating George Bernard Shaw's writing hut

It was the anniversary of the death of one of the 20th century's most famous shedworkers earlier in the month (November 2, 1950) and National Trust volunteers and staff at his home Shaw's Corner in Hertfordshire, just up the road from Shedworking HQ, along with members of the Shaw Society marked the occasion with a wreath laying on his marvellous writing hut, accompanied by three readings.

Vivien Leigh visits George Bernard Shaw's garden office

The famous actress (and wife of Laurence Olivier) numbered among her film roles a starring part in the celluloid version of Shaw's play Caesar & Cleopatra.
