Religious Sheds Week: Ecotoilets

The fine folk at Lutterworth-based Ecotoilets (experts in all aspects of dry and composting toilets) have got into the spirit of Religious Sheds Week and sent in these wonderful examples of church-based sheditecture. Here's what Richard Saillet from Ecotoilets says about them:

"The smaller 'gargoyle' one [pictured top] offering a waterless toilet in its own shed was supplied to the Churches Conservation Trust to allow them to offer 'Champing' (Church Camping) at a church at Albury, near Guildford, as a means to raise funds to maintain redundant churches. This has proved so successful they are planning to offer more churches this year and we are providing similar cabins for those that don't have facilities.

"The larger two were installed in the grounds of the St Germans Priory in Cornwall and offer full disabled toilet facilities for visitors to this lovely listed Priory which is quite a tourist attraction not far from Plymouth."

Garden office toilets

Most shedworkers simply nip back to the mother ship when they need to powder their nose (and some I know simply nip behind the bushes), but if you want a lavatory without going through all the rigmarole of applying for planning permission to hook up to mains water, then consider a waterless version.

We've mentioned Ecotoilets before on Shedworking but the fine folk at Rotunda have also pointed us in the direction of WooWoo who specialise in waterless and composting toilets - an example is pictured above, birch plywood around a stainless steel structure with a pine roof.

You can sort one out yourself, or you can get your garden office supplier to source it. Here's a nice example of an Ecotoilets model inside a 2m internal diameter Rotunda with a 100mm wall cavity, single skinned polycarbonate dome and surface mounted lights.

Ecotoilets sheds

Readers with long memories will remember our 2008 series 'Thursday Outhouses' which took a regular look at the smallest shed in the garden. So we were interested to hear from Richard Saillet at
Ecotoilets which supplies waterless lavatories for use in garden offices and studios. It also supplies lavatories along with a 'shed' (though they call it a cabin) which can be made of wood (smallest model pictured above), synthetic concrete, or moulded plant-based resin. They are already quite widespread in use  in private gardens, allotments, golf clubs, schools, churches, not least because there is no difficulty or expense of putting in a water supply and sewage pipework.

Here's what Ecotoilet say about shedworking:

There is a steadily growing demand for garden rooms and offices. The difficulty comes when you want to install a toilet. The cost of digging up the garden to put in a water supply and a sewage outlet, which may need a pump if the lie of the land isn’t suitable can increase the bill by several thousands of pounds (not counting the cost of the water used). Installing an ecotoilet not only avoids all this expenditure, it also means that a toilet can be installed within a couple of hours.
