Pubworking: the future for shedworking?

We've been talking about pubworking as a viable working option for the future on Shedworking since 2006 so we were pleased to see that 'futurologist' James Bellini made a similar point recently at the London Transport Museum and Orange debate on the impact of Connected Britain. The panel suggested that the days of the traditional office environment could be numbered and Bellini commented:

“Why not Wi-Fi enable the village hall or the local pub and provide places for people to hot-desk? Connectivity doesn’t mean the end of social interaction; it’s a way of enhancing it. By eliminating the dreaded commute – on which 4.6 million hours are spent daily – people could use the time for more productive purposes.”

Of course there can be problems involved but only yesterday some of us were discussing the idea of #pubworking on twitter and arguing that pubs should operate a special section for homeworking nomads. What are your thoughts?

Julie Hall's garden office being built on twitter

Julie Hall, founder of Women Unlimited which aims to double the percentage of female entrepreneurs in the UK over the next 20 years, is having a garden office built today by Green Retreats. Dome Garden Buildings

Dome Garden Buildings come from Dingley Dell, the same folk who brought us the African Pot House. Specifically built for use as a garden office, they have the curving feel which is all the rage at the moment. The 6m diameter dome (height 3.5m) can be insulated and is made out of glass fibre reinforced concrete and built on site rather than coming in a flatpack. There's a good interview with the designer Jay Emery by Caroline McGhie in the Daily Telegraph.

Shedworking reduces your CO2 emissions drastically

According to inhouse research from OfficePOD (pictured above), there is a 63% reduction in CO2 emissions when moving to OfficePOD from a traditional office. Here's how they reckon it when moving from five days in an office with commute to three days in an OfficePOD and two days travelling to a central office for meetings: 5.4 tonnes are created per user in the five day office situation compared to only 2 tonnes for the three day shedworking setup. As you'd expect, the savings come largely from the lack of commute and less power required for heating, lighting and cooling.

Five Small shedworking spaces

As we reported at the back end of last year, the Interior Design Show in Toronto featured five shedworking spaces in Summerwood sheds under the heading of Five Small Rooms. Treehugger's Lloyd Alter went along and posts about his visit here (he was also kind enough to send Shedworking some extra photos) but it's well worth a long post on this site too.Above is Urban Mode's approach.This one is by Roomy Interiors and aimed at female shedworkers.These two shots show FTL+SC's shedworking design.And here is Mimi Pineau's look which includes an espresso machine and wine fridge.
