Thoreau's Cabin

Following yesterday's post on the Thoreau radio programme on the BBC, reader Stephen Ray Peterson quite rightly pointed out that the photo alongside was in fact a replica, not the actual cabin. He also kindly pointed to a great selection of photos and illustrations of the cabin, then and now, at Fourpeaks including the one above of the inside of the cabin, complete with writing table. He also points to an excellent article on the 'discovery' of the cabin at Walden Pond at the University of Kentucky Program for Archaeological Research which is well worth a browse indeed.

Thoreau and the American Idyll: radio

As we know, Henry David went to the woods because he wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life and not, when he came to die, discover that he had not lived. As part of Melvyn Bragg's excellent In Our Time series for BBC Radio, there's a great half hour programme on Thoreau which you can listen to again here over the next few days and a chat about him on their message boards here.

Man cave garden office video sketch

An interesting video sketch of a 'man cave' garden office at fnerd.com inspired by Brian DeHamer's office. The plan is for it to be:

Building an office in the garden

A nice set of photos showing the gradual construction of a great garden office by dizzythedog.com. I like the one with the nipper.

Lantern shed

Though it looks like a spot for some superduper high-tech shedworking, this lovely building - named the Lanternshed - is in fact a straightforward tool shed. Owned and built by Barry Bless and Jennifer Watson, it has a green roof and corrugeated fiberglass panels so that one light at night turns it into a lanternshed. There's a marvellous slideshow of the build at their website plus more information about their Rocio Romero’s LV Kit home which inspired it.
