Soham's 'flying shed' - be careful out there

We've talked before about when sheds go bad in windy weather and here's another example from the Ely Standard who published a set of photos by engineer Vassilis Papanikolaou who was driving out of Soham towards Newmarket on his way to work (sadly, he's not a shedworker) when a large shed was blown onto the road in front of him, forcing him to undertake an emergency breaking procedure.

Building a garden office near a river

Many thanks to everybody who responded to the question about building a garden office or shed near a river earlier in the week. Peter Ilsley of Swift Foundations got in touch and sent photos (pictured above) of units sat on their stilt system which he points out may be useful to people who intend to build on a flood zone or near to water. Meanwhile, Lynn Fotheringham of InsideOut Buildings (Lynn wrote the section on planning permission in the Shedworking book) also emailed to say that her company knows about building garden offices next to rivers and would be happy to talk to potential customers about their experience.

I also had a Twitter conversation with @fergycool aka Chris Lindley whose garden office build we followed last year in some detail. His office is about 30m away from the river at the end of his garden but he is planning a second one just 10m away: it will be built by Cambridge-based garden office supplier Myspace but Chris recommends that anybody attempting this kind of build within a few metres of the bank should contact the Environment Agency first. Riverview: garden office now workable

Another of our favourite recent garden office builds is pretty much finished now, Chris Lindley's Riverview renovation project. He reports that it is now all wired up and workable following the second fix by the electrician and the completion of work on the floor. "Now that the electricity was live I could start working on making this into a proper office," he says. "That is finish the networking, and get myself a desk! I intend to use some 2×3 timbers and a solid wood kitchen worktop to make a desk, but in the meantime I used some of the surplus flooring chipboard and two trestles. Seems solid enough!"

Riverview: garden office renovation

Chris Lindley's garden office (and indeed house) renovation project is going very well indeed (more details and photos at the Riverview blog here). Riverview: garden office renovation

Chris Lindley: nearly a shedworker

There are all sorts of ways of following a garden office build and one of the newer ones is to do it on twitter. Shedworking has been keenly watching Chris Lindley (@fergycool on twitter as he refurbishes an old building in the back garden of his new home, turning it into a garden office, pictured above pre-refurbishment). @shedworking re Insulation - I ordered Kingspan TR31 boards for a warm flat roof. Gonna go with some normal Kingspan for the walls too.

so joists, fascia boards, long, long screws and insulation boards all in the garden. The weekend plan for the shed roof cannot fail!

Noooo! I arranged for a very early morning timber delivery, the day after a whisky tasting evening. How daft am I?
