Ecofriendly Hully Garden Pods

Although they do have larger models, Shedworking is particularly taken by Southampton-based Hully's smallest garden pod, The Dory, pictured above. Inspired by the hull of a boat (but upside down, of course), they have all the must-haves (electrics, insulation, etc) and are delivered fully assembled. The Dory has a very compact 1.2m depth under its fibreglass shell and perhaps best of all is made from more than 300 500ml recycled plastic bottles (the bigger models reuse even more, obviously). The official office pod version of it also comes with a built-in desk.

Dreadnort Boats' P.O.D.

An intriguing build here (with hat tip to Uncle Wilco from readersheds.co.uk) from Dreadnort Boats in New Zealand. The pod here is actually 'P.O.D.' which stands for Point Of Difference, an irregularly-shaped prototype built from toughened safety glass windows and marine-grade aluminum plating, marketed as a garden/portable office. It comes in at 5.1m x 2.5m x 2.5 m and is mounted on height-adjustable jacks.

Features include solar panels,  space for an optimistically estimated dozen people to sit down, under-seat storage, drop-down tables (which double up as beds). According to the designers: "Our concept came about from a case study in 2011 for a multi-use tsunami survival shelter that would double as a boat and caravan" though they point out that "It should be noted that our POD, in its current form will not stand up to the forces of a tsunami due to our door design and large windows."

The Pod Floating Studio

Artist Kathryn Webley produces her canal-inspired fused glass aboard her 28ft narrowboat The Pod. It's a purpose-built studio moored on the Chesterfield Canal built by The Little Boat Company. Here's what she says about her work"

"I fell in love with the canals first; moved onto a narrowboat and then aspired to be an artist afloat. I began experimenting with fused glass when I purchased a small table-top kiln. I was immediately hooked. I took the scenes of the nature I observed on the waterways and used glass to represent them. The same stretch of canal can change completely depending on the season, the weather and time of day."

Boat Pod garden office for sale

Boat Pod

Those looking for a truly one-off garden office should take a look at the Boat Pod, a 4m-high shedlike atmosphere constructed by Barney Dearsly who runs Weathered by Water - it is the former bow section of Cornish fishing trawler the Anthony Stevenson built in 1945, with its original curved larch planks and oak ribs, now covered in fibreglass to make it watertight.

It comes with a large circular doorway with sail canvas 'door', electrics, oak floor, wood burning stove (which was made using an old mast step), and Penzance port name and number, and all together, in Barney's words "offers the comforts of 21st century living within a cosy, atmospheric and beautifully crafted structure that was built to withstand the waves of the Atlantic Ocean". ----------------------------------------------------
