Help save Derek Jarman's Prospect Cottage

An appeal to safeguard film-maker and artist Derek Jarman's former Victorian fisherman's hut and garden in Dungeness is underway, led by the Art Fund (more details at the link - they're about halfway there as it stands with a couple of months to go). The campaign aims to raise £3.5 million to secure the future of the cottage and its iconic garden as a centre of creative activity. The plan will be overseen by Creative Folkestone who will also restore the garden and run a residency programme for artists, writers, gardeners, filmmakers, academics, and activists. The cottage will also be open to the public for visits.

Garden office therapy studio

Here's a custom designed therapy studio for a Garden Affairs shedworker in Somerset. "The customer lives in a small village and the building would be viewed by anyone passing her lane," explains Poppy Squire from Garden Affairs. "She therefore chose a Linea with its low profile roof as she felt that a lot of other buildings she had looked at with large roof overhangs were too imposing. The Linea also allowed her to position the building close to her boundary."

The treatment room is 3.5m x 2.5m, with vertical groove cladding, fully insulated and double glazed, with a triple window (one fixed panel and two tilt/turn windows for ventilation), and oak laminate flooring, all with a larch wood exterior painted soft grey to blend into the garden. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Replacing an old garden studio

My fellow co-author on the Haynes Shed Manual (click the link for a 25% discount if you still haven't bagged yourself a copy) John Coupe, has been busy this year, currently building a shed in his workshop (replacement parts loaded above and ready to be built on site). This will replace a 50-year-old 4x7m garden studio that he demolished last week which had come to the end of its life due to timber decay from a leaking roof. "It came down with a very satisfying 'whumpf'," says John. If you're thinking of a bespoke shed build, click the link above to go to his website. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Garden room with side overhang

An interesting exterior feature here from Bakers Timber Buildings, an aluminium tri-slider Executive Pent model. It measures 4.8 m x 3.8m with a lare matching overhang/canopy coming in at 2.4m x 3.8m with downlights and a pendant light fitting. As well as the aforementioned sliding doors at the front, there are French doors to the side to offer the much-sought after dual aspect. Doors and windows are all in matching 'Anthracite' aluminium, with a Firestone EPDM roof.
