Garden office with home cinema

A 28 square metre garden office build from Rubicon Garden Rooms that will leave many readers very envious. During the day it is used for normal working purposes by shedworking owner financial planner Paul Williams, but whenever necessary he (and his wife Caroline and young son Tommy) can also take advantage of the 100 inch screen  on one wall. Here's what he says

“We had two choices – add an extension on to the house or build something separate in the garden and, given the difference in cost, this seemed like a sensible compromise. One wall is painted dark grey, which is the best for projecting on to, and I’ve got an HD projector, surround sound with six speakers and a big sub-woofer – it’s perfect really.”

Garden room with toilet

An interesting 'before' and 'after' from eDEN Garden Rooms in Teddington. Here's what they say about it:

As our client needed their garden room to be 3m in height, the project required planning permission which the eDEN team helped to obtain. The room was designed to be at least 1m from all boundaries, and due to this, planning permission was successfully granted without any amendments. Before the build could begin, the eDEN team spent an initial two days clearing the site of trees and shrubs and levelling the ground, to create a clear environment for build to take place.

The build measures 7m by 4.7m, clad with our old friend western red cedar, with a 4-door bifold and has a large deck. Inside, there's a skylight in the roof  as well as a separate store room and eco-toilet, fast becoming the most fashionable add-on feature of 2017.

Music studio garden office soundproofing

An interesting section on the Garden2Office site about how effective soundproofing can be and which materials they use to achieve their successful sound insulation on their own bespoke sound studios. First, here's the video showing what can be done:


It's worth clicking the link for exact details about what they use, but in short they add to the already insulated standard wall units by adding sound-absorbing bars pre-plasterboarding, making use of acoustic rock wool insulation, putting in an eco-friendly sound insulating board, and installing an acoustic barrier mat between the first and second layer of acoustic plasterboard. -----------------------------------------------------------

Turning a shed into a garden office

There's an excellent step-by-step and photo-by-photo account of turning a shed into a garden office by Claire Douglas at At Claire's House. Here's a snippet:

So there were a few stipulations for the office space; electrics must remain as they were, the same with lighting and most of all it most cost NEXT TO NOTHING…argh! This meant using furniture and shelving we already had and any accessories being home made or super cheap.

An interesting little thing. HomeAdvisor.com has put together a video of famous writers' workspaces and bedrooms. "If anyone is looking to renovate their garden office", a spokeswoman told Shedworking, "they should consider drawing inspiration from their favourite iconic author's decorative style." The video features Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Flannery O'Connor, Henry David Thoreau, Victor Hugo, Emily Dickinson, Marcel Proust, and William Faulkner.

The Smart Garden Offices story

A nice piece in the East Anglian Daily Times looks at how Charlie Dalton and Smart Garden Offices have grown their shedworking, and now micro home, business. “A garden office should feel just like a room in your house," he says. "Warm, comfortable, safe, secure, robust and filled with natural light." Here's a snippet:
