First look at Chelsea Flower Show shepherd's hut

As reported earlier on Shedworking, here's an early glimpse of this marvellous shedlike build. Here's what they say:

"The Artisan Gardens area is the ideal place to focus attention on the simple beauty and craftsmanship of a shepherd's hut. The garden, featuring a wildflower garden and disused watercress bed, is very personal to Plankbridge: not only because the hut is hand made, but also because much of the garden will come from the company founders' own garden in Piddlehinton - a wildlife haven."

Shipshape Camping Huts

Inspired by the Lindisfarne fishing huts and despite their title, Harrogate-based Shipshape do specifically say that their shedlike atmospheres are ideal for use as garden offices. There are three main models plus a bespoke service - features of the SIPs-built huts include tanalised feather edge board cladding throughout, double doors with deadbolt lock, pad foundations, carpeted floor and coat hooks.

Sheila Blake: shedworker

Artist Sheila Blake works in this marvellous copper-sided garden office built on a sloping piece of ground in Takoma Park designed by Travis Price Architects. The entrance faces away from the main house and the whole thing rests on exposed concrete pillars. Large windows and skylights allow plenty of light into the space. The build is featured in Neal Zimmerman's excellent Home Workspace Idea Book where he likens it to a floating boat moored at a wharf.

Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts...

The Beano rarely features garden offices and sheds. Very rarely. Remedying this situation is Derek 'Deek' Diedricksen's new book Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts and Whatever the Heck Else We Could Squeeze in Here. Regular readers will know about Deek from his Relax Shacks blog and Tiny Yellow House videos and his book is similarly intriguing, a collection of imaginative sketches - and some photos - of garden offices, sheds, treehouses, dens and other bits of microarchitecture, all with handwritten commentary (though deliberately not with detailed how-to instructions). And if that's not enough, not only is there a short piece in there by me about storage, there's also a sketch of me too... It's hard to imagine that there will be a better book about sheds published this year, nor one by a nicer chap. Incidentally, if you want to catch him in person, Deek is teaching some Tumbleweed Workshops, the first on April 14-15 in Miami.

The Boffice

We've often written about the use of pubs as great places to work for the shedworker on the move, so were delighted to see this piece in Metro Focus, 'Step Into My ‘Boffice’: Bars Where Your Laptop Goes Down Smooth'. "WiFi is available in more places than just cafés," writes Jamie Helmsworth. "And some of us need something a little stronger than espresso to get it all done before the deadline. Thus, the boffice. Bar + office = boffice." The article includes 10 place to sit and work and have a drink.

Garden cinema room

Among the new designs that Garden Spaces are showcasing at Grand Designs Live 2012 in May is their ‘Garden Cinema Room’ concept, a complete home cinema package for your garden building (catch them at G151). They've put it together with partners Artcoustic.
