Stitch Studio

Stitch Studio is a garden office for a fashion design lecturer and professor of urban design, designed by Chung Tyson and an entry in this year's AJ Small Projects Awards. It has a 15m2 footprint representing the full width of the back garden of a 1960s mid-terrace, and the exterior hand-printed Danish cement panels are inspired by stitch patterns and finished in lichen-coloured mineral paint . According to the architects, "these cloak the studio in a protective shell whilst registering changing light and weather patterns...The semi-porous material absorbs and releases the temporary pattern of rainfall, highlights the stitch pattern when wet and serves as a protective backdrop activated by dappled light and shade." The interior is lined with birch playwood and also features a clerestorey window, an eco-friendly green sedum roof, as well as a secret door...

EscapeSpace

Those of you interested in the tiny home movement may know of Wisconsin-based Escape because of their attractive tiny houses. Now, they've branched out into the garden office and studio market with their EscapeSpace range. There are three models, all of which come in a tongue and groove cedar design, LowE thermopane windows, clerestory windows, and and EPDM roof (see my recent Haynes Shed Manual for why we're fans of this approach) with additional options such as decking and solar panels. The whole thing is delivered fully built on site.

Japanese tea room-inspired garden office

A rather beautiful build from Rotunda for a (sizeable) garden in East Sussex, it is inspired by the Japanese Tea  Room aesthetic. It measures 3.5m (external diameter) and comes with some minor roof segment adjustments to add to the look. Doors and windows are made from Douglas Fir and finished in a clear lacquer.  -------------------------------------------------

Black sheds and garden offices in the Idler

The latest issue of the Idler magazine is now out featuring my regular columns on sheds and snooker - the first is all about how black became the chic colour of choice for new sheds and garden offices, and the latter is all about my snooker New Year's resolutions (it is the November/December issue). Both are delightful pieces as always and there is much, much more elsewhere in the magazine as always. Soundproofed garden office

Built in Cambridge by Swift Garden Rooms, the client had a wish list of design features which required thinking outside the modular garden office design system box. Swifts rooms are already highly insulated as standard which offers good levels of acoustic performance, but one of the key requests was for the building to have additional soundproofing. The result is that this extra acoustic insulation has made this garden office a really quiet place to work.
The glazed corner of the building is accentuated by a 500mm deep recess which has LED downlights recessed into it. A composite decking board has been used with carefully positioned holes cut into it for planting topiary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shepherd's hut recording studio

Delighted to share with readers of Shedworking a sneak peak at the latest build by Plankbridge which will be used by the client as a recording studio and is currently nearing completion in their workshop. 

"It is for someone to have as a garden studio," explains Plankbridge's Richard Lee, "with a decking area for mini concerts outside, and is wired for computers, monitors, a recoding desk and some funky lighting. Whilst it isn’t Abbey Road, it has been soundproofed to some extent using acoustic plaster board under the interior lining, insulated with Thermafleece sheep’s wool and the ceiling is lined in an acoustic material. The customer will be adding other technical things like special curtains and baffles.

"We are very pleased with it – the colours and layout are very bespoke to the customer, but we think it works really well."
