Rosendale Allotments

There are all sorts of shedworking atmospheres and some of the nicest are not in back gardens. The buildings designed and built  by The Commercial Escape for the Rosendale Allotment Association are an excellent example, a meeting centre and social hub for the 18 acre site in London. As well as a resource centre and library, there's a kitchen, lavatory and space for workshops and events for the local community.

Boulton and Paul fully revolving summerhouse for sale

Revolving Boulton and Paul summerhouses don't come onto the market for sale very often, and even less frequently fully restored ones. Rachel Barron has been in touch with us to seek a buyer for what she calls her 'complete labour of love' which she describes as 'in the main entirely original and believed to be Boulton & Paul'.

"We have restored it back to its former glory retaining a lot of the original structure," she says. "While it does not have a Boulton and Paul metal tag I believe it was made by them as it is identical in many ways to one of their designs."

Project Andrews, St Albans

Group shedworking

In a bid to maximise the use of its Hexham headquarters, Northumberland National Park has created a range of work spaces in four bespoke 'pods' in its grounds. With the help of a secure computing network installed throughout the site, embryo companies and sole traders can enjoy high levels of wireless connectivity.

“Good connectivity is one of the most important things for our business to run smoothly and efficiently” said Rebecca Hodkinson, Administrator at Bloodaxe Books which has already moved in.

Steve Willis at Northumberland National Park added: “Historically, a lot of rural businesses have really struggled to compete in the marketplace as they simply don’t have the internet and wireless connectivity those in more urban areas have. This system is an absolute godsend to them and has enabled us to put the site to really worthwhile and profitable use.”

Sir Paul Smith's garden office

A lovely shedworking design by Nathalie de Leval (excellent photos at her site) for fashion designer Sir Paul Smith as part of the V&A's  'The Wish List' project with the American Hardwood Export Council, Sir Terence Conran and Benchmark Furniture and as part of the London Design Festival (September 13-21).

Smith said he wanted "somewhere where you can go to switch off, somewhere to relax" and the finished design - which measures 3m by 3m (apparently the same size as his first shop) and is built using thermo-treated ash - will not actually be in a garden but will be on top of a hill or in a forest. Best of all, it revolves, like George Bernard Shaw's, and has a panelled glass wall.

Garden office with green wall

A nice example of a vertical green wall working in perfect harmony in this excellent piece in the Daily Telegraph by Naomi Slade about the delights of green walls. It belongs to Sarah Shuter and David McIver in London. Here's a snippet:

“Everyone thinks it is fantastic,” says David. “It contains things like heuchera, ferns, grasses and ivy which filled the space and gave instant cover. There was one little problem when someone accidentally turned off the irrigation system, but Treebox [who installed it] has been great. I love it!”

Viz magazine is written in a shed

Viz comic/magazine (Billy the Fish has always been a Shedworking staff favourite) is written in a garden office in Whitley Bay, reports Buzzfeed in an excellent article that covers the rise and fall and rise of one of the most popular magazine titles of the last couple of decades in the UK.

The shedworking atmosphere where the writers/editors Simon Thorp and Graham Dury work also boasts as sofa, chairs and coffee-making facilities. Here's a snippet from the piece:
