Shedlike speciality coffee shop in Manchester needs funding

Here's a fascinating project to set up a coffee shop in Manchester in a garden office-type pod. Peter Gibson and Luke Tomlinson of Grindsmith are looking for funding on Kickstarter .

Here's a snippet of their plan:

Whoever said that 'great things come in small packages' could well have been speaking about our pod. With just enough seats for 8, and space solutions that Ikea would be proud of, we aim to bring a more personalised coffee experience to the good folk of Manchester.

UK Men's Sheds Association officially launched

Although it's been kind of up and running since March, the UK Men's Sheds Association was officially launched today - click here to read our extensive coverage on Shedworking on the subject and organiser Mike Jenn has also written a marvellous piece about the importance of Men's Sheds in the Guardian today. But in brief here is their own description:

A Men's Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men's Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.

It's well worth having a look around their site where there are lists of sheds up and running already around the UK, a list of events and advice on how to get started. Well worth a browse. -----------------------------------------------------

Ben Fogle: shedworker

A nice - if perhaps rather blokey - piece by broadcaster and traveller Ben Fogle about his shed in the Daily Telegraph (which also mentions a quarterly magazine called The Shed - I wonder if he's getting confused with the pdf forerunner of Shedworking?). Here's a snippet:

"While many people prioritise practicality, my vision is entirely driven by aesthetics and provenance. I wanted everything in my shack to have been recycled, upcycled or reused. And of course, it had to look the part. The doors came from an old museum, the wooden cladding was from pallets, the lights were salvaged from a ship, the windows came from an old factory. The crowing glory was a tiny wood-burning stove, to provide a glimmer of heat in the upcoming winter. All of this was topped off with a children's turret, with a tiny trap door, ladder and firemens pole."

The Culture Cart

St Albans-based travelling shedlike atmosphereThe Culture Cart is a "pop up art workshop, gallery and space for creative dialogue" on a bicycle which travels to run events around the UK. Here's how they describe themselves:
