What part did sheds play in the US Presidential Election?

While it would be perhaps pushing it slightly to suggest that sheds helped President Obama to be re-elected yesterday, they did play their own little part in the election process in Iowa. According to The Des Moines Register, a log cabin in a park in the middle of Slater (central Iowa, fact fans) was used a a polling station. The cabin was built in the late 1930s from native hardwoods and has a big American flag inside. Meanwhile, around 150 votes were cast in a maintenance shed in the titchy town of Berkley in Boone County - they had to take their snow plough out of the shed to put up all the voting paraphenalia, booths, tables, etc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hermitage hut

Ethan Hayes-Chute lives and works in Freeport and Berlin, using paintings, sculptures, large-scale installations and artist's books, to "explore the ideas of self-sufficiency, self-preservation and self-exclusion as models for living". His work includes the intriguing Hermitage hut (click here for more images and here for more information about his work) made out of found objects but do click around the site for other examples of his shedworkingesque microarchitecture.

Wattle and daub shed in San Francisco

A marvellous video from faircompanies.com showcasing Julie Glanville's inspirational hut on the city's Ellis Street built using local earth (obviously), bamboo and tule reeds. Naturally it has a living roof too. The shed is used to store tools but also has a shedworking element to it too as it's also used as a local art gallery. Really worth a watch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bid for an Olympic Judging Hut

A judging hut from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games used for the dressage events at Greenwich Park Arena is going under the hammer at Sotheby's New Bond Street as part of their November 5/6 Sporting Memorabilia sale. Guide price £3,000-£5,000 More details here. This would be a unique buy as five of the original seven were donated by LOCOG to equestrian heritage centres in the UK. As the details say, this would be "ideal for re-use as a garden office". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Woodworm Project CD

This collection of songs was donated by artists to help in fundraising towards repairs to the Songs From The Shed shed following a woodworm infestation. Architects' Journal Small Projects 2013

Entries are now open for the 18th year of this annual marvellous competition (see here for details of winners from last year) which according to AJ's editor Christine Murray "rewards ambitious architects who apply big ideas to small-scale commissions with cash prizes and publicity."

Closing date is November 19 and there will be a shortlist of 24 projects which will be featured by AJ in their print magazine and their super duper new iPad app as well as in an exhibition.
