Kids' Shed

We mentioned the marvellous Out of the Ordinary project The Shed last week but there's now also a Kids' Shed. On March 19 and 20 Out Of The Ordinary will be transforming the former One o’clock Club on Shacklewell Street, North Brick Lane into a spectacular pop-up kids’ shed, fit for the next generation of makers, fixers, tinkerers and diy enthusiasts: it's not just grown-ups who need space to potter and tools to tinker.

If you can help clean floors, fix shelves, paint walls, draw murals, or make tea, please join them for a glorious weekend of transformation, fun and fulfilment. Children are welcome, refreshments will be provided, and there will be final party to
celebrate on Sunday evening.

The Kids' Shed will run workshops in essential skills such as how to make a rocket from an old Coke bottle, how to design a marshmallow catapult, how to customise your bike and how to fix stuff so cleverly no one will even know you broke it. The Kids' Shed aims to be open in time foor the 2011 Easter Holidays and run an intensive programme from April 11-24, before pausing to recoup before a summer holiday DIY extravaganza. Controversial shed plans in Edinburgh

Plans for an allotment shed in Edinburgh's New Town have been criticised by community groups and residents who, according to The Guardian, believe the five-metre high shed designed by Sutherland Hussey Architects could damage views of Georgian Edinburgh. The design is Tardis-like, making the proposed shed appear larger from the back than the front. Its architect Charlie Hussey told the Guardian that the design reflected the character of other local buildings:

"The idea behind it is that it's on the edge of the site, it's unapologetic in it has prominence and it points to the end of Mackenzie Place from Stockbridge. Traditionally these big Georgian piles have gatehouses, small buildings but monumental in that they have presence. We wanted to give this hut the same character. We also liked the idea of creating a warped internal space, where it's very tall at its narrowest point and shallow at its widest point."

Hussey's goal is to build what will become a social hub for the allotmenteers, a place for meetings and an organising spot for social activities. The building is insulated and will also feature a stove to burn wood from the allotment on cold days.

Turning your shed into a garden office

Sami Grover recounts in some details over at Treehugger how he turned a storage barn structure at the back of his house into a garden office. So instead of building something new they reused the primary structure, converted the lean-to at the back into a workshop area using the original doors from the barn to enclose it, and incorporated reclaimed, recycled and otherwise sustainable materials throughout the project.

One of the most intriguing elements of the build is that Sami brought in Marty Hanks from Sweat Equity Constructionwho encourage clients to "use their labor and design skills during construction, while enjoying the security that comes from using a highly skilled team of craftspeople". The idea is that clients learn new skills - and save money. The article is well worth a read.
