Painter's studio and home office

Here's a lovely bespoke shedworking build in Wickham Market by architects 2hD for painter and fellow freelance journalist Michael Clarke which was Highly Commended by RIBA. Here's what 2hD say:

"The studio is carefully placed to complete the layout of the garden and to make best use of natural light and views out. The interior space is dramatic for such a small building, but it also has a cosy and relaxed feel, supporting long periods of focused creative work. The building is very well insulated with a small woodburning stove, used only in the coldest times, to provide all the heating needs."

And here's what Michael says:

“I wanted a flexible working space set apart from the house, with a district personality that would, nevertheless, not clash with the village setting. The studio is a real joy. Being flooded with natural light and with high levels of insulation, it uses little energy. I seldom turn on the lights, even on the gloomiest of days, and the stove is only lit occasionally, as the building keeps a regular temperature throughout the year.”

Historic shedworking 1880s-style

One of the companies most alive to the importance of garden office/shed design is Historic Shed. Pictured above is one of their recent builds, a 12'x14' climate-controlled shed to be used as archives storage on a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places and settled in late 19th century Florida - it will also be used as a shedworking space for visiting researchers. The brief for Historic Shed was to design and build the shed to complement the existing historic site, something they've certainly achieved. Among its many lovely features are the cypress board and batten siding, exposed rafter tails, a custom dutch door and gable-end lattice details drawn from the various buildings on the property. "Salvaged historic windows for the shed were provided by the owner and still have all their wavy glass panes," says Jo-Anne Peck of Historic Shed. Pictured below are a desk constructed of cypress planks provided by the owner and the pecky cypress ceiling with shellac finish. Read more about the build here where there are also more photos.

New animation studio replaces old shed time-lapse june-december 09 from Mulesfilm on Vimeo.

A great video from Australian film studio Mulesfilm, an artistic collaboration of Miles Blow and Julie Pitts. It was made over several months though the actual build only took about eight days.

Garden offices on rails

Could garden offices on rail tracks be one of the futures of shedworking? Swedish architects Jagnefalt Milton has come up with a clever plan for the city of Åndalsnes: buildings rolling through the city on rails. The idea is that buildings - such as offices, hotels, saunas and even concert halls - are rail-mounted and rolled around on the existing rail networks depending on seasons and need. "It's not only a good proposal which we are very proud of, it's also fully doable," says Carl Jägnefält of Jägnefält Milton.
