Blob: eggworking

Blob by architects dmvA is a mobile shedlike atmosphere with a definite egg-like appearance. It was built as a moveable living unit but with an eye on being used too as a garden office or studio when the architects were having planning permission problems with a client.The structure is largely wood (click on the links below to see step-by-step images of it being built) and inside is a shedworking atmosphere which really is something extraordinary.

Waltons Shed Design Competition 2010

The design a shed competition season for 2010 is starting early with Waltons announcing a great prize for the winner of theirs: they have their shed made by Waltons for free. All you need to do is send them a sketch or some notes about the shed you have in mind (pictured above is their Devon Summer House) and why Waltons should build it. It needs to be:
* Maximum width – 1.83m
* Maximum length – 2.45m
* Maximum height - 2.5m

And use:
* 12mm thick pine wood cladding
* Pine wood framing
* 9mm thick ply wood
* OSB 10mm & 8mm thick
* Styrene glazing.

Entries can be as pdf, jpeg or indeed simply on good old paper. Closing date is March 15 next year. You can email your submission to entries@waltons.co.uk or send it to their postal address which, along with the full rules and more details, is here.

M112 PODS

There are not many shedworking-related toys and accessories, but here's something from Paris Renfroe Design which is just right, the M112 POD, a miniature 1:12 scale replica of an actual shipping container that has been converted into a living space. Each POD is unfurnished but comes in a variety of colours with:
* Baltic birch interior ceiling, walls, and floor
* Window wall with frosted upper and lower sections
* Sliding panel clear doors for easy access
* One solid sliding panel door
* Port hole in floor and ceiling for stacking and roof access
* Metal tube rung ladder to upper port hole

True Colours Interiors: Shedworkers

Horsham-based interior designn company True Colours Interiors has recently experienced a shedlike epiphany and Katrina Smith explains why:

The idea for a garden office, came when I decided I didn’t want to have to pay rent and rates any longer and also that I liked the idea of trudging down the garden path in my nghtie from the kitchen to the office! I didn’t want to go back to working in the house in the study, which I had previously shared with my husband, two kids and the hamster! My husband’s In Tray would often spill from the desk onto the floor, and it was all too messy to work from.

Pallet playhouse

Regular readers of Shedworking will know that we're very keen on using pallets in the building process. So we were delighted to hear from John Kratman who desiged and built a playhouse made of pallets - which as he says could easily be modified into a shedworking atmsophere - spending just $200 ($100 on paint, the rest on odds and ends he couldn't get for free). "Not only was this project fun," he says, "I also traveled a lot and met a great many very nice people who were giving perfectly good materials for little or no money." Off shedworking: Darwin's Dogs

Emma Townshend, Shedworking's garden shows editor and gardening columnist of the Independent on Sunday., has a marvellous book out now - Darwin's Dogs - which would make an ideal present for anybody who likes Darwin, dogs and just good old intelligent, readable writing. Darwin, who loved dogs, used them as evidence for his famous theories of evolution and Emma tells this story using lovely illustrations, letters and his own remarkable scientific observations. If you only read one book about Darwin in his anniversary year, then it should be this one (which happily is published by Frances Lincoln, publishers of the Shedworking book next year).
