Pink sheds: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

View Original Version here (via Easy Shed) Easyshed are raising awareness and funds to support Breast Cancer Care. Firstly they are donating £200 directly to the charity, but they are also running a ‘Pink Shed’ campaign and aim to get a picture they have created of a pink shed shared 10,000 times on Facebook. If they achieve this they will create a new pink shed range, available for the public to buy directly from their website. "We feel this is a brilliant way of raising awareness," says Matt from easyshed, "and helps the shed market branch out because sheds shouldn’t just be for men! George Clarke - who has been doing so much in recent years for shedlike structures on his Amazing Spaces and Shed of the Year programmes on Channel 4 - has been shedsharing on the Instagram. Hat tip to Uncle Wilco. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Sheds in St Albans Cathedral

St Albans Cathedral hosts a major flower festival this week with huge displays around musical themes. And there's also at least one rather attractive shed.

Garden office at terraced house

An excellent example from Green Studios of the advantages of shedworking, in this case in a London terraced property, where it is used for video production. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Is this the smallest garden office in the world?

The Poki is a frontrunner in this category, measuring 2m squared externally. It was designed and built by Huw Grantham to answer the question he posed himself, do you actually need a room big enough to stand up in?

Not only is it delightfully titchy, a lot of it is recycled and includes an old vinyl VW camper bench seat and solar powered lamp. Huw says one 'slides' into it rather than stands up in it and has a blog all about the build which is well worth a read. Here's a snippet
"The idea was to design an office small enough to not lose your garden to, but bigger enough to comfortably work in hours at a time. The whole not standing up in the office came from the fact that our discussion was taking place in a van. We were comfortable, there was plenty of light and space so why not apply those same principles? The idea of sliding into the office was born."

ContainerVille

ContainerVille is a new initiative for young creatives looking for affordable shedlike atmospheres in which to work and grow their entrepreneurial businesses. It is made up of 30 converted storage containers on the south bank of Regent’s Canal, London, with low rent and minimal overheads so that small businesses can grow..

The containers are fully functioning spaces for up to five people per container - a whole container can be rented for £1,200 per month or individual desk spaces (each container has space for four desks) for £320pp per month. The goal is that ContainerVille becomes a dynamic hub of start-ups and small businesses, with landscaping around the containers geared to promote collaborative working and integration, with shared outdoor areas overlooking the canal.

Nearly a third of the containers were pre-let before the fit out was complete and viewings for the remaining containers are underway. More details at their site.

Rosendale Allotments

There are all sorts of shedworking atmospheres and some of the nicest are not in back gardens. The buildings designed and built  by The Commercial Escape for the Rosendale Allotment Association are an excellent example, a meeting centre and social hub for the 18 acre site in London. As well as a resource centre and library, there's a kitchen, lavatory and space for workshops and events for the local community.

Boulton and Paul fully revolving summerhouse for sale

Revolving Boulton and Paul summerhouses don't come onto the market for sale very often, and even less frequently fully restored ones. Rachel Barron has been in touch with us to seek a buyer for what she calls her 'complete labour of love' which she describes as 'in the main entirely original and believed to be Boulton & Paul'.

"We have restored it back to its former glory retaining a lot of the original structure," she says. "While it does not have a Boulton and Paul metal tag I believe it was made by them as it is identical in many ways to one of their designs."

If you're interested in finding out more, please email Rachel directly --------------------------------------------------------------------

Group shedworking

In a bid to maximise the use of its Hexham headquarters, Northumberland National Park has created a range of work spaces in four bespoke 'pods' in its grounds. With the help of a secure computing network installed throughout the site, embryo companies and sole traders can enjoy high levels of wireless connectivity.

“Good connectivity is one of the most important things for our business to run smoothly and efficiently” said Rebecca Hodkinson, Administrator at Bloodaxe Books which has already moved in.

Steve Willis at Northumberland National Park added: “Historically, a lot of rural businesses have really struggled to compete in the marketplace as they simply don’t have the internet and wireless connectivity those in more urban areas have. This system is an absolute godsend to them and has enabled us to put the site to really worthwhile and profitable use.”

Pictured are Steve Willis of Northumberland National Park and James Madgwick Sales Executive at Pivotal Networks which installed the system. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sir Paul Smith's garden office

A lovely shedworking design by Nathalie de Leval (excellent photos at her site) for fashion designer Sir Paul Smith as part of the V&A's  'The Wish List' project with the American Hardwood Export Council, Sir Terence Conran and Benchmark Furniture and as part of the London Design Festival (September 13-21).

Smith said he wanted "somewhere where you can go to switch off, somewhere to relax" and the finished design - which measures 3m by 3m (apparently the same size as his first shop) and is built using thermo-treated ash - will not actually be in a garden but will be on top of a hill or in a forest. Best of all, it revolves, like George Bernard Shaw's, and has a panelled glass wall.

Garden office with green wall

A nice example of a vertical green wall working in perfect harmony in this excellent piece in the Daily Telegraph by Naomi Slade about the delights of green walls. It belongs to Sarah Shuter and David McIver in London. Here's a snippet:
“Everyone thinks it is fantastic,” says David. “It contains things like heuchera, ferns, grasses and ivy which filled the space and gave instant cover. There was one little problem when someone accidentally turned off the irrigation system, but Treebox [who installed it] has been great. I love it!”
Well worth a browse. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Viz magazine is written in a shed

Viz comic/magazine (Billy the Fish has always been a Shedworking staff favourite) is written in a garden office in Whitley Bay, reports Buzzfeed in an excellent article that covers the rise and fall and rise of one of the most popular magazine titles of the last couple of decades in the UK.

The shedworking atmosphere where the writers/editors Simon Thorp and Graham Dury work also boasts as sofa, chairs and coffee-making facilities. Here's a snippet from the piece:
In this shed are two affable middle-aged men with one of the most remarkable stories in the history of British publishing to tell. It’s a story that encompasses more than 30 years, includes everyone from Hollywood actresses to Boris Johnson to David Bowie, and tells you everything you need to know about the industry’s modern history. But you wouldn’t know it. They’re just two average blokes. As one of them says, “The actual job’s never really changed.
Well worth a read (and views of the writing shed inside and out). --------------------------------------------------------------------
